Research Institute of Horticulture

The Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice, Poland is a research and development unit supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It was established 1st January 2011, following the fusion of the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture, founded in 1951, and the Research Institute of Vegetable Crops, founded in 1964. Currently, the Research Institute of Horticulture consist of four separate units: Pomology, vegetable crops, floriculture in Skierniewice and apiculture in Puławy, with a total 582 employees, including 186 research scientists. 

The Research Institute of Horticulture carries out research, lectures in physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, creative breeding, protection of genetic resources, plant pathology, fruit and vegetable storage and processing, food safety, horticultural engineering, economics and marketing, cultivation of orchard, vegetable and ornamental plants, edible mushroom cultivation and apiculture. The research is a statutory activity, involving many exterior projects, both national and foreign.

The Institute is also involved in commercial activities. It performs food analyses in several authorised laboratories. The Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice is an important instructing and training centre as well. It is entitled to grant doctoral and post-doctoral degrees, as well as carrying out postgraduate studies.
